Telenovela hunk dishes on new role

Cape Town – South Africa audiences first met David Chocarro in Behind Closed Doors where he played multiple characters.

And now the Mexican actor is back on our screens in a new telenovela, Iron Rose on Telemundo (DStv 118) Monday to Friday.

This time around he plays handsome lawyer Saul Aguirre, a women's rights activist who falls in love with both mother and daughter.

In a quick Q&A David told us more about the series, what he loves about his character and what he hopes viewers will take away from the telenovela.

What drew you to the character and the story?

The thing that I liked the most about my character in Iron Rose was its truth. It is a man who in the beginning appears to be a hero, very handsome, and with good luck. But slowly, he shows his weaknesses. That’s why I liked the challenge, to know that he could be loved and hated at the same time.

Is your character, Saul Aguirre, someone you would be friends with?

Saul and I could be friends, definitely. He is a trustworthy man with a lot of values. He is honest in spite of the consequences, and that is a hard to find virtue.

South Africans last saw you as Diego/Martín in The Face of Destiny. How is this character different from that one and others you have played?

Saul is very different. Diego/Martin has to untangle not only his deepest sorrows, but also discover all the lies that have surrounded him throughout his life. Saul on the other hand is a mature person, self-confident, trustworthy and a fighter for justice. He hardly ever feels intimidated. His weakness is love.

You play a lawyer who fights for women’s rights. What kind of preparation did you do for the role?

We wanted to focus on the corruption of some countries, more than the attorney aspect of it. I focused on a documentary I saw called Presumed Guilty where they talk about the irregularities of that country (Mexico). The objective was always to show the impotence and frustration of the attorneys in a corrupt system.

What was the most challenging part of playing this character?

The most difficult part of playing this character was the transition, from being an incorruptible lawyer, to becoming a human being capable of taking justice into his own hands, with the moral conflict inside his mind – in addition to the effective losses of the character throughout the story.

The telenovela covers a wide range of themes like domestic abuse and political and business corruption. What do you hope viewers will take away from the show?

It’s been few times I have encountered a story with the opportunity to raise awareness. We hope that Iron Rose helps men and women raise their voices, to denounce abuse. Also, we hope that people learn about different types of abuse through the storyline - not only physical - which we should never be accomplices to.

What’s the one thing about the series that will surprise fans?

I think that Iron Rose will surprise fans with the level of truth of the series. All the cases in the plot are based on true stories.

You spend so many hours a day, six days a week on set, what do you do to unwind?

I like to spend time with my family and playing sports.
