Here's the one piece of advice Donald has for Idols SA hopefuls

Cape Town – The search for this year's South African Idol is in full swing.

Season 13 auditions kicked off on Saturday, 14 January in Cape Town.

R&B singer Donald joins judges Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengana and Somizi Mhlongo as the first guest judge of the season.

We had a quick chat with Donald ahead of the golden ticket auditions about what he's looking for in an Idol.

Are you a big Idols fan?

Yes, I am generally a fan of music talent shows both locally and internationally. I'm always watching and discovering new talent.

What are you looking for in an Idol?

I am looking for passion in an artist - for someone who has that hunger and respect for the craft. When you're in the audience you can tell the difference between an artist who respects what they do over one that doesn’t. I'll be looking for that one thing that sets you apart. Generally I think most people can sing, but I'm going to look beyond just the singing talent for the X Factor - someone who has extraordinary charisma.

What’s the one song/artist nobody should sing during an audition?

For me it has to be John Legend All of Me and R Kelly I Believe I can Fly. It's a big no. These songs have been sung so many times on music talent shows. I don’t want to hear those songs - unless you come in and do it in a totally different way that no one expects.

What will you be bringing to the judging panel?

I'm going to bring the realness. I'm here to judge and see who we can make it to be our next idol. It's going to be an interesting experience and I am looking forward to it.

Is the Idols publicity enough to crack it in the music industry?

Definitely, if you look back on the past five years most of the people who have been top 10 now have careers in the music industry. Idols is a very huge stepping stone for anyone trying to breakout in the industry.

What's your one piece of advice for contestants?

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! Make sure your rehearse properly. When you're well prepared you'll never go wrong.
