Johannesburg - Believe it or not, WWE is still one of the most watched shows on e.tv. With Wrestling Raw alone raking in 2.4 million viewers per episode, it seems our love for John Cena, Roman Reigns et al is still strong.
Capitalising on the growth in the WWE female division, Total Divas is a spin-off reality show that follows the most popular women fighters in and out of the ring.
With season four currently on screen, I’ve been watching the divas and made these observations:
1. THEY’RE DEDICATED ATHLETES
In one episode, newcomer wrestler Eva Marie sports deep purple bruises across her forearms and torso after training for up to six hours a day. Although WWE is choreographed, the wrestlers still hit the mat pretty hard and sustain serious injuries.
2. WWE WRESTLERS ARE LOADED
The mansions, the cars, the trips – whether earned from contracts with WWE or endorsement deals, one thing is clear: WWE is a worldwide empire and its stars earn big bucks.
3. IT’S GUILTY VIEWING AT ITS BEST
It’s all scripted (sometimes badly so), but Total Divas is an ideal Friday afternoon guilty watch. It’s so cool seeing strong women making it on their own terms in a testoterone-fuelled industry.
