Cape Town - These musical dramas, comedies and documentaries on internet TV will put a song in your heart, an ear-worm in your brain (sorry!), and a spring in your step this weekend.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rebecca is an ace New York lawyer. Then a chance meeting with her first love who broke her heart years ago makes her decide to leave everything behind and move to California seeking love, happiness and contentment. Show co-creator and lead actor Rachel Bloom and her co-stars wrote and deliver all the songs in this musical comedy, and they’re deliciously funny and perfectly on point. Even if you’re not usually sold on shows where characters spontaneously burst into song (do you even have a soul, though?), you’ll fall in love with this one. It didn’t win a Critics’ Choice Award, a Golden Globe and two Emmys for nothing, you know. Look out for Office star and writer BJ Novak in a cameo as himself.

Cassper Nyovest: Fill Up the Dome

The haters couldn’t quite believe that our very own homegrown superstar could pull it off: Draw a full house, sell-out, 20 000-strong crowd at Joburg’s Ticketpro Dome … but he did, and this documentary, exclusive to Showmax, is proof. Go behind the scenes with Cassper and find out about his hectic schedule and all the hard work he’s put in to go from his humble beginnings to being crowned the King of Motswako.

Chicago

A housewife who killed her lover reinvents herself as a star while she’s in jail awaiting her criminal trial in an effort to court the fame that could keep her from the gallows. Her prison-mate is her idol, vaudevillian Velma Kelly, who’s inside for the cold-blooded murder of her husband and her sister. Now the two murderesses must battle it out for the public’s favour, complete with song, dance and All That Jazz. This early-2000s classic is set in the roaring 20s and stars Renee Zellweger as housewife Roxie Hart, smouldering Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly and Richard Gere as Billy Flynn, their smooth-talking lawyer.

Nashville

(Seasons 1-4)

From award-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri comes this intriguing drama about two very different country music stars who are forced to team up to boost their careers in the Nashville music scene. In the latest season, young Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) finds that her star has finally risen, with a new album coming out soon, and her starring role in a movie giving her widespread fame. Meanwhile, her reluctant touring partner Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton), who’s been on the scene for decades, sets out to make her “vanity project” record label Highway 65 a success, with or without Juliette. The songs on the show are enough to bring even the staunchest critic of country music round.

Garfunkel & Oates

The real-life folk comedy duo Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome star in this addictive TV series loosely based on their lives as they muddle their way through thirtysomething singledom. They launched their comedy special Trying to Be Special last year. Dip into either the special or the series for hilarious, irreverent and definitely NSFW songs including Pregnant Women Are Smug, Weed Card, I Don’t Know Who You Are and This Party Took A Turn for the Douche.

The Get-Down

From Baz Luhrman, executive producer Nas and other legendary collaborators comes this massively popular musical drama set in the nightclub scene of the Bronx in the 70s. Through the eyes of young poet Zeke and his group of friends, who become known as the Get Down Brothers, we watch the last days of disco fade away as hip hop rises to the fore. This group of kids from the South Bronx holds the power to change the world of music forever - but the road to fame is paved with dangers.

A Long Strange Trip

What is it about the Grateful Dead? That’s what this brand-new rock doc attempts to answer. From executive producer Martin Scorsese comes an absolute joy ride that runs almost as long as a Grateful Dead show, at just under four hours, and features footage from concerts and interviews with living band members and their friends and family. Yes, Deadheads will go crazy for it, but it’s billed as a documentary that even those who can’t stand the band’s eclectic mix of rock, psychedelia, jazz, reggae and experimental music will be enthralled by.
