Cape Town – Meet Kwini Kuza – a band consisting of teenage prodigies aged 13 and 14 from Durban and Stanger.
The band, who perform original as well as cover songs across multiple genres, have been making waves since the release of the music video for their latest single, Speed of Light, in May.
They wrote the song together with their management, and it was produced by internationally acclaimed UK producer Marc JB. Marc JB has worked with the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Sergio Mendes and has done remixes for Rihanna and Britney Spears. He has over 70 #1 Billboard Dance hits under his belt.
Their versatility is unmatched for performers so young and as a result the group has received invitations to perform at major music festivals and television shows in South Africa.
We recently had a chat with band members Lasandra Majola, Saiyan Naidoo, Sabian Singh, Neo Mooi, Emtle Mdletshe and Siphokazi Gebashe.

What is the story behind Kwini Kuza? How did you guys start making music together?
Lasandra: Our manager and our drummer’s Dad had put together a band of some amazing young musicians here in Durban – Saiyan Naidoo, Sabian Singh, Neo Mooi and my two girls, Entle and Sipokazi. They saw me performing at Durban Jazz Festival in 2015 as a solo performer and asked if I would join the group. I said yes and the rest is history!
When did you start making music for the first time? At what age and which instrument did you play?
Sabian: We started playing together in February 2016. The band members have been playing from the following ages: Lasandra, Sabian and Saiyan all started at 4 years old. Neo, Entle and Siphokazi all started at 9 years old.
How was it to work with British producer Marc JB on your single Speed of Light?
Entle: It was great, he has worked with some major international names so we learned a lot from him producing the song. It sounds amazing!

What do you like most about the recording studio?
Neo: It’s fun playing and recording, it also makes you better on your instrument because if you make a mistake you can hear it clearly in the studio.
What do you do for fun when you’re not making music?
Siphokazi: Some of us like soccer, the boys like video games and the girls like to dance!
What’s the one thing no one knows about you?
Saiyan: We love messing around, playing games and eating sweets (usually all at the same time)!
What’s your advice for up-and coming musos out there?
Sabian: Practice a lot, play with different projects as you learn from playing with different people. And if you are at school remember that school comes first!
