WATCH: Oprah Winfrey in new gripping true-life drama

Cape Town – Oprah Winfrey stars in a new HBO movie of an unsung hero.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells the story of Henrietta Lacks whose cells were used in ground breaking medical research.

In 1952 Henrietta who had with cervical cancer had a biopsy done. Doctors discovered that he cells could multiply and never die naming The HeLa cells. 

Her cells were used without her consent and cloned in 1955. 

Henrietta's family only learnt about this in 1975. 

Winfrey will play her daughter Deborah who pieces together her mother's history and fights for her to be recognised.  

The film is based on the book of the same name written by Rebecca Skloot (Rose Byrne) who helped Deborah in the search for her mother's past.
