A musical, a thriller and an action flick open in SA cinemas this weekend

Cape Town – Get ready mateys, the pirates sail back onto screens this weekend.

The fifth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean sees Jack Sparrow having to face a new menacing nemesis Captain Salazar.

Also showing in cinemas is a flimsy thriller starring Katherine Heigl and that weird Ryan Gosling movie that everyone hated.

Here are 3 new films at the local box office:

Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge returns to the franchise’s roots and remembers why the audience loved it in the beginning.

Movie: Unforgettable

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: Unforgettable attempts the uncomfortable task of combining serious social themes - namely a domestic violence subplot - with camp horror, and the result is an uneasy, disappointing mishmash of serious and laughable.

Movie: Song to Song

Our rating: 1/5

Short review: An intolerable non-movie, Song to Song may just be Terence Malick's worst film to date.
