Cape Town - Former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams has revealed that she suffered mental health issues in the height of the girl group’s success.

Speaking on the chat show, The Talk, the 37-year-old said that she had suffered with depression from the time she was a teenager up until her adulthood.

"I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time, suffering with depression," said the singer.

"When I disclosed it to our manager [Beyoncé’s dad Mathew Knowles] at the time, bless his heart, he was like, 'You all just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You’re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?'

"So I was like, 'Oh, maybe I’m just tired,'" she said.

She then added that she didn’t get better after this but just ended up becoming suicidal.

"I was suicidal."

"I was at the place where it got so dark and heavy...and wanted out," she admitted to the show’s hosts.

The Say Yes singer added that she was inspired by Demi Lovato’s courage in speaking out about her struggles – to speak out and tell her story.

"I just want to normalise the discussion," said Michelle.

She later went onto Twitter and thanked the show’s hosts – amongst whom was Sharon Osbourne – for giving her a 'safe space' to share her story.

She also clarified that she did not mean that she wanted out of Destiny’s Child when she said she 'wanted out'.
