From riches to rags: Kim’s new Instagram aesthetic has people talking

Cape Town – She was known for her thousands of selfies and flashy Instagram posts showing off her jetsetter lifestyle and expensive pieces of bling.

But since her triumphant return to social media at the start of 2017, Kim’s Instagram posts have taken on a completely new look and feel.

It undoubtedly has something to do with what happened on 3 October 2016 in Paris.

What was just another day at Fashion Week ended with robbers forcing their way into the private Paris residence where Kim was staying.

They tied her up, held her at gunpoint and then locked her in a bathroom before making off with her jewellery.

At the time, a spokesperson for Kim said she was badly shaken but physically unharmed. The robbery raised new concerns about security in the French capital after a string of deadly extremist attacks.

Kim had a habit of showing her jewels and whereabouts in her social media, including days before the robbery when she posted pictures of herself attending fashion shows.

It seems like she’s learned from her mistakes if her new Instagram aesthetic is anything to go by.

Gone are the flashy "rich life" posts, instead replaced with grainy family pics in a grittier surrounding.

On social media people are scratching their heads and calling Kim out for trying to look "poor".

But Kim is queen of social media and a master at re-inventing herself. Her return to social media saw 42.8 million viewers tune in on Snapchat alone in the first 24 hours. On Instagram her follower count has now grown to a massive 90 million.

Is Kim trolling us? Is this just a phase? Is she sending out a message to her haters? Is this part of a new project? Or is it just a case of new year, new Kim? Only time will tell.

Here’s a look at Kim’s posts before and after the robbery:
